LeafSnap FAQ

Why doesn't LeafSnap recognize my Plant?
Two possible explanations::
1) Your photo is unsuitable to be correctly used by the visual identification service. In this case, you can take one or more new photos, following the following recommendations:
  • Take an isolated, well-developed, close-up photo of a flower, leaf or fruit in the center of the image.
  • Avoid photographing your fingers or any other object / or plant not belonging to the desired species (pot, ruler, etc.).
  • Make sure that the focus is on the photographed organ and not on the background of the image.
  • Combine potentially several images of the same plant before submitting your observation.
2)The species searched for is not or only slightly illustrated in LeafSnap. We'd appreciate it a lot if you could give us the list of plants that our app is currently unable to identify. Then our team will try to optimize the engine accordingly. Contact us at contact@plantidentifier.info

How to use LeafSnap:

To identify a plant, simply take a picture of the plant or select a plant picture from your "Photos" and LeafSnap will identify it instantly!

Tips on taking pictures:

A clear shot of plants with proper angle and distance will help LeafSnap identify plants more accurately.
1. Focus the plant at the center of the frame, avoid dark or blurry images.
2. If the plant is too big for the frame, just make sure to include the leaves or flowers of the plant.
3. Avoid getting too close, just make sure the leaves or flowers are clear and complete.
4. Focus on the flower if your plant has flowers.
5. Only include one species at a time.
With your location information, "LeafSnap" can give you more accurate identification result.

Remember:

  • Pay attention to the surrounding environment and stay safe when taking pictures.
  • Don't eat any wild plants.
  • Don't touch any unknown wild plants, because some may be toxic or may cause allergies.

Is LeafSnap Free?
LeafSnap app is still free and the subscription is optional. If you do not like the premium version, you could skip the subscription offer page to get started totally for free.
Why do I need to give LeafSnap permission to access my camera and gallery?
Yes, and if you do not the app will become non-responsive during the identification process! When you Snap a photo with LeafSnap, the app needs somewhere to store that photo on your phone. LeafSnap creates an album in your camera gallery called LeafSnap, where your LeafSnap photos are stored. If you do not allow access to your camera gallery, LeafSnap has nowhere on your phone to store and analyze the photos, so it will not work properly. To make sure your have given the app your correct permissions please check this:
Apple – “Turn permissions on or off”
To do this, open the Settings app and scroll down to the list of apps at the very bottom.
Tap an app and you’ll see the permissions it wants.
You can enable or disable individual permissions for specific apps from here.
Android – “Turn permissions on or off”
On your device, open the main Settings app.
Tap Apps or Application Manager (depending on your device, this may look different).
Tap the app you want to update.
Tap Permissions.
Next to a permission you want to turn on, move the switch to the right until it turns green. If you want to turn a permission off, move the switch to the left until it turns gray.
How to remove plant in my collection (My Plant)
To delete plant in My Collection(My Plant), You can choose a plant which you want to remove then tap to heart button at right corner or delete button in "My Plant"
How can I propose a new feature?
All you have to do is write to us by e-mail, indicating as precisely as possible the type of functionality you would like to provide. The ideas we receive enrich the list of evolutions that we plan on an ongoing basis, and that we do our best to implement.
Can I use the mobile app in offline mode?
In order for the app to identify images, yes, your mobile device must be connected to the Internet. However, if you are somewhere without a connection but would like to identify a plant, simply take the photo and save them to your gallery. When able to connect to the Internet, simply upload the photo into the app! Offline mode of the identification service is part of our development objectives. However, our work on this point has not yet allowed us to propose it in this version.
Which languages are LeafSnap Support?

To change the language you want, please tap to Language at the right of corner in setting page.
How does the technology actually work?
LeafSnap uses proprietary artificial intelligence technology to identify plants in its database. Furthermore, as users submit their photos with suggestions, the technology “learns” to recognize more types of plants.
The app isn’t working for me. 90% failure to identify so far??
This is a problem with the photo you took. If the species you are trying to identify is currently trained into our algorithm, the LeafSnap success rate is 96%. LeafSnap requires closeup photos of the flowers of plants and the leaves of trees.
What is the purpose of my data?
An observation contains the same data as a query (image(s), date and time).
As for queries, shared observations might be used as part of research work.
Can I delete and image or observation I have identified?
It is not currently possible to delete an image from a shared observation.
The query corresponds to one or many photos of the plant to identify, the date and time of observation
When modifying a query (adding or removing an image for example), a history of queries and associated results is stored.
Our identification services are available on different platforms ( Android, iOS). In order to optimize our developments, we store the terminal type used for each query.
We store query data as well as results suggested by our identification engine because those data play a crucial role in the set up of a participative observatory of vegetal biodiversity, which is one of the main goals of the LeafSnap platform.
Moreover, those data allow following the evolution of our system’s performance through time. They also lead to an improvement of this performance.
Those data might be used as part of the ecology and/or IT research work by LeafSnap team members. So we can assess wild vegetal species distribution, the evolution of phenology (blooming, fructification dates...), the apparition of invasive species... or teach the identification engine to automatically reject inappropriate images (blur flowers, photos which subject is not a plant...).
Does LeafSnap only accept new pictures or can I submit photos from my mobile devie gallery ?
LeafSnap accepts both new photos and photos from your gallery! Just make sure your photos are in-focus and properly framed.
